Michael Quill, Mayor
12312007_111119_1.jpgMike, first of nine children to Ralph and Anna (Salata) Quill, grew up in Auburn. After living on Pleasant Street for ten years, the family moved to Fitch Avenue, where Mike’s youngest brother, Matthew, still lives. Being the oldest of nine children instilled the values of honesty, integrity and teamwork at a very young age.

In 1968, at the age of 18, Mike followed his father’s footsteps by enlisting in the United State Marine Corps. During his four years as a Marine, Mike visited many places here in the United States as well as other countries. A year of this time was spent on a tour of duty in the Far East including Viet Nam. It was during these experiences that Mike had the opportunity to experience first hand how others lived and worked in our own country, as well as foreign countries, and made him appreciate and value the democratic system in which we live.

Mike received an Honorable Discharge in 1972.  Despite employment opportunities in other places, Mike decided to come home to Auburn. Following in his father’s footstep once again, Mike became an Auburn Firefighter in 1973. Mike worked his way through the ranks and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1980, Captain in 1986, and Assistant Chief in 1994.  Finally, in 1995, he became Chief of the Auburn Fire Department and led the 72-person team for 11years.

Mike met his wife, the former Joan McDonald, who grew up on Beardsley St. here in Auburn. They have been married for thirty-three years and have lived in their home on Lansing Street for twenty-nine of those years. They proudly raised a son and a daughter here in Auburn.  Their children include Michael Jr. and his wife Megan, Colleen and her husband Robert Cross, and their child Jonathan Michael Cross who was born on July 24, 2007. Making Mike and Joan first time Grandparents!

After thirty-two years of service, Mike retired from the Auburn Fire Department. With his experience gained through living and paying taxes in Auburn, in the military and as a City Department Head, Mike is anxious and eager to give back to Auburn what the city has given to him and his family as did his father, Ralph P. Quill, an Auburn Firefighter for thirty six years, grandfather, James D. Quill, an Auburn City Councilman for twenty years and great grandfather, Jeremiah Quill, a member of the Cayuga County Board of Supervisors for many years before him.
